Birmingham School Staff Receive Bumper Compensation Payouts

Birmingham City Council

Birmingham school staff have been awarded compensation payouts totalling almost £1m in the last five years, according to figures obtained by FOI By Proxy.

In its response to a Freedom of Information request, Birmingham City Council confirmed that it had settled 181 compensation claims by making £915,837 worth of payments to school staff injured in the course of their duties since 1st January 2010.

The largest single payment, £113,905, was awarded to a female teacher assaulted when she attempted to split up a fight between two male pupils. She suffered serious injuries that left her unable to return to work.

The Council also made payments to staff who were injured on a window catch (£40,000), fell on stairs (£30,000) and slipped on paper (£22,000). In one instance a worker received a £25,000 payout after being injured on a bouncy castle.
